My sister-in-law (my wife's sister) worked for a while as a home care
person for elderly folks. She would visit them during the weekdays and
help them clean house, making dinner, bathing, whatever they needed help
with. She formed rather close friendships with a few of them.
One woman she visited often became a widow about 4 years ago. She and her
husband had been seperated for a while and lived in seperate homes. One
Saturday night he had a heart attack and his first reaction was to call
his wife, which he did. He only got in a few words before it overtook him
and he passed away, leaving the line silent.
Ever since that night, her telephone has made clicking noises each
Saturday night at 9:07, his time of death. You know the noises, the ones
you often hear if someone is on another extension and is dialing out (or
maybe you don't know - that's what it's like where we live). Anyway,
that's what she often told my sister-in-law, who related the story to my
wife and I. We thought it was an interesting story, but figured it was
likely her imagination or somthing (like perhaps the phone company was
running scheduled line tests... who knows?).
Well... this woman went away for a week and asked my sister-in-law to
house sit. My sister-in-law asked my wife to come stay with her, get away
from me for a while :-) Sure enough, Saturday night at 9:07 the clicking
noises started. They could determine that about 6-8 numbers were dialed,
then the sounds stopped. They could hear the clicking coming from both
telephones in the house. Here's the kicker: when they went to the phone
in her bedroom, it was clicking but IT WASN'T PLUGGED INTO THE WALL!
True story.
